NY SINGEL. alt-J exploderar in i 2022 med “Hard Drive Gold”

Mercury Prize-belönade alt-J inleder 2022 med att släppa en ny singel från det kommande albumet. “Hard Drive Gold” är tredje spåret ut från “The Dream”, som släpps 11 februari (Infectious Music/BMG).

“Hard Drive Gold” är en rejäl energiexplosion, en andlig efterföljare till 2014 års “Left Hand Free”. Låten drivs av ett direkt och obevekligt groove, där Joe Newman skapar utrymme för försiktigt subversiv lyrik riktad till dem som är ute efter att tjäna snabba cash på kryptovaluta. Den skanderande refrängen “Don’t be afraid to make money, boy” ökar i styrka genom hela låten – det verkar mer likna en varning än ett firande.

Gus Unger-Hamilton berättar: “Hard Drive Gold is a slightly tongue-in-cheek song written at what we thought was the height of the cryptocurrency gold rush. It’s the story of the ultimate childhood fantasy, the schoolboy who becomes a millionaire overnight, and the different interactions he has with people in his life from teachers to neighbours. How ironically you interpret its message is entirely up to you…”

Videon är Joe Newmans regidebut. Under bandets karriär har Joe varit med och utvecklat grundidéerna till flera alt-J-videos och med “Hard Drive Gold” tar han nu steget fullt ut. Videon är regisserad tillsammans med Darcy Wallace som koreograferar för både film och musikvideor. Joe berättar: “Growing up enjoying cinema greatly I saw our music videos as opportune moments for directors to create stories purely and so we the band did not appear in our videos. By avoiding cuts to a band playing in an ‘aeroplane hanger’ the audience could focus on the cinema over the indie band music video tropes. I had ideas for videos that I passed on to directors to develop, watching these directors execute some of these ideas inspired me and now I want to understand and experience the process at a deeper level.”

“Hard Drive Gold” är uppföljare till emotionella “Get Better” och förstasingeln “U&ME”, en inspirerad ögonblicksbild av bandets upplevelser på sommarfestivaler i Australien.
